Campus update
Campus Update is a fortnightly all-staff email keeping you up to date with news from around the University. Here, you'll find important messages for staff, as well as some highlights from our community and events.
Supporting students through start of session
The majority of new students arrive at the University this weekend for the start of term on Monday 24 September. Student Services have developed a set of FAQs on Workspace, covering basic queries that colleagues may be asked by students over the first few weeks of term. For any queries not covered here, please direct students to the Student Services website, or to the nearest Student Service CentreA number of changes and updates have also been made to resources and processes. These initiatives seek to improve the experience of staff and students, responding to the continual improvement and customer service work of the Student Services department. Many are also specific responses to the OESS Review.
Making student mental health a priority
The Universities Minister Sam Gyimah has written to all university Vice Chancellors in England, calling on them to make the mental health of their students a priority. UoN Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West has welcomed the focus and has responded to the letter to highlight the work already taking place at the University of Nottingham to support students, and plans in place to improve this support.
New student accommodation
Colleagues on the University's UK campuses may notice some additional building work over the next few weeks. The University is creating a further 325 rooms to meet additional requests for on-campus living.
Teaching timetables and module enrolment
Timetables for returning students will be available from this week.
Card reader project
This Autumn semester, a number of colleagues in the School of Chemistry, the School of Politics and the Faculty of Arts will be taking part in a Card Reader project pilot that aims to improve the way in which the University collects attendance data.
Nottingham Reading Programme  a new approach
The Nottingham Reading Programme launches this week  and this year, there is a different feel and approach.
USS pensions  Joint Expert Panel report published
A report has been published by the Joint Expert Panel, which was established to examine the valuation of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).
Get involved in #WasteNott: our new campaign to reduce single-use plastic on campus
In May 2018 we asked staff and students to tell us their thoughts on single-use plastic on campus. We had an incredible response and a number of targets have been developed that we can all get involved with. We're making a number of changes to reduce single-use plastic on campus, including introducing a levy on disposable hot drink cups and installing more water coolers around campus.
Black History Month
During October 2018 the University of Nottingham is proud to be celebrating Black History Month  an opportunity to celebrate Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) culture, history and our BME community. Our programme of events includes film screenings, panel discussions and more.
Spotlight on... our international campuses
This edition's spotlight on... acknowledges the work of teaching staff across our campuses. In news this week, the Mayor of Ningbo, Qiu Dongyao, visited the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) to pay tribute to the teaching staff. Read more on the UNNC news page.
Among highlights at the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNMC) is that Dr Show Pau Loke, an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious DaSilva Award 2018 from the Society of Biotechnology, Japan for his research on converting wastewater to bioenergy and bio-products using microalgae technology. New and enhanced digital research services available
The University has invested over £3m in the last 12 months in developing and enhancing digital services for research. These services will support researchers by improving information security and enabling research that will have the greatest impact in support of our University research strategy.
Kerry Law: moving on
Kerry Law, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer and a member of the Executive Board, will leave the University of Nottingham on Friday 7 December 2018.
Car parking permit renewals  reminder
The new car parking permits came into effect on Saturday 1 September 2018. Have you renewed your car parking permit?
And finally... New Cripps Health Centre now open
The new Cripps Health Centre on University Park is now complete and has opened to patients.
