Campus update
Campus Update is a fortnightly all-staff email keeping you up to date with news from around the University. Here, you'll find important messages for staff, as well as some highlights from our community and events.
Wonder 2019: submit your activity proposals
We're currently inviting activity proposals for the next Wonder event, which will take place on Saturday 15 June 2019. Wonder is a key calendar event for engaging with the local community, and is jointly led by the Institute for Policy and Engagement and Nottingham Lakeside Arts. This year's event will be themed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table of the Elements. We're looking for activity proposals that link subjects to the elements — whatever the field of study and interest. Submit your ideas by Friday 15 February 2019.
Campus Solutions implementation plan
Professor Sarah O'Hara, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, describes recent progress with Campus Solutions and highlights what you can expect to see over the coming weeks as we start rolling out the new student records system across our UK campuses.
National Student Survey 2019
This year's National Student Survey (NSS) is due to launch at the University of Nottingham on Monday 28 January. The NSS is used by prospective students to compare satisfaction rates of their preferred universities, and also to inform changes here at the University of Nottingham with a view to improving the student experience. We are asking for the help of all staff in communicating the NSS to eligible students.
University leaders warn against No Deal
University leaders have written to politicians and government to warn of the risks for research, staff and students if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.
Private medical scheme  extended application window
Applications are currently open for the new AXA voluntary private medical insurance scheme. The application window has been extended to include January 2019, with the cover backdated to 1 January 2019. Further details can be found on the Employee Hub.
LGBT History Month at the University of Nottingham
February 2019 will once again see LGBT History Month take place at the University of Nottingham, with a programme of events organised as part of a national celebration. 2019's events will be aligned along the themes of Peace, Reconciliation and Activism.
Teaching and Learning Conference  save the date
The conference will take place Thursday 2 May (afternoon) and Friday 3 May 2019, and will be aimed at staff and PGR students. The theme is Universal Design: meeting the challenges of teaching and learning in 21st Century Higher Education. If you're interested in attending, please save the dates in your diary. We'll be announcing further information — and making a call for paper submissions — in the near future.
Clinical trials registration
New guidance on registering clinical research studies and trials has been published to define what, why and where these should be publicly registered. The Clinical Research Governance Policy — Trial Registration is applicable to all University staff conducting clinical research where results are intended to be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Our Vision for Technical Talent  launch event
In December we held an event celebrating technical talent — where we had the opportunity to showcase and share the diverse activities and wider impact of technical staff across our University. The event also included the launch of our new strategy to ensure increased profile, recognition and opportunity for technical colleagues.
Spotlight on... our international campuses
University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) opened its new MRI facility on Friday 14 December. The Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre (SPMIC) at UNNC develops and applies magnetic resonance techniques in a broad range of areas, including research on hardware and software of MRI techniques. Academics from the University of Nottingham Malaysia's Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Centre of Sustainable Palm Oil Research have been highly commended in the Biotechnology Award at the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Awards 2018 for their work on a new bioreactor for biogas production from Palm Oil Mill Effluent. Event of the week Educating about genocide: remembering the pink triangle prisoners of Sachsenhausen
An event held to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. This event takes place 12:30-1:30pm, Friday 25 January.
And finally...
A science super fan took a 12 hour detour in December to meet his YouTube hero at the University of Nottingham. Eight-year old Ajay Sawant and his family, from California, visited the School of Chemistry where they met Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff, as well as Dr Samantha Tang and Dr Debbie Kays. Ajay had been inspired by the Periodic Table of Videos and during his visit he was shown how to make his very own glowstick — and create impressive reactions using dry ice.
