Celebrating inspirational women
As the countdown to International Women's Day 2019 #BalanceForBetter begins, the University has started to showcase the incredible talent, skills and contribution women are making every day.
University Mental Health Day
Throughout this week, we're holding a number of student events — to inspire conversations around, raise awareness of, and help shape the future of student mental health.
Nominate international colleagues for photographic portraits
For the next stage of the University's Portrait Diversification Project we are asking staff and students to nominate international colleagues who make a real difference to life at the University. Proposals are encouraged for individuals or teams of international staff who make the university experience truly exceptional for staff and students. The deadline for nominations is Friday 15 March.
Celebrating our European colleagues  join us
In recognition of the enormous contribution that European staff make to our University, to Nottingham and to the UK, we are holding a special event to hear the stories and celebrate the achievements of our European colleagues. Meanwhile, as the run up to Brexit continues, the Global and Political Affairs Unit has published a new briefing addressing what we know so far about the process of leaving the European Union: read the briefing.
From Kurdistan to Nottingham  and a top Maths honour
The University of Nottingham has held an event to celebrate the amazing achievements of PhD alumnus, Caucher Birkar, who studied at the University after escaping the brutal war between Iraq and Iran and was last year awarded the Fields Medal — the highest honour in Mathematics.
Staff networks review — have your say
All members are staff are invited to contribute to a review of the University's staff networks, as part of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) review commissioned by the EDI committee.
Technical Skills and Conference Fund announced
The Technical Skills and Conference Fund supports the development of technical staff at the University of Nottingham. Technical colleagues can apply for dedicated funding for courses and conferences to further their skills and expertise.
University of Nottingham brand masterclasses
External Relations has organised a series of masterclasses to bring colleagues up to date with the University's brand. Attendees will learn how to commission design work, access helpful resources, and practice writing copy in the University style.
New LMA blog: 'emotional intelligence and change'
Changing how you do things is relatively easy. Changing how you feel can be much more complex. In her second blog post in a Leadership and Management Academy (LMA) series looking at change management, Jaspal Kaur, Director of HR, explores the impact of emotional intelligence during change.
Spotlight on... our international campuses
The University of Nottingham Malaysia has conferred an honorary degree to British High Commissioner to Malaysia, H.E.Vicki Treadell, during a ceremony on Saturday 23 February. Read more.

Meanwhile at University of Nottingham Ningbo the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, Professor Shearer West, recently met with the Party Secretary of Ningbo, Mr. Zheng Shanjie. The meeting included a discussion about the China Beacon project, which focuses on intelligent manufacturing, green chemicals and energy and healthcare. Read more.
Event of the week Nottingham International Women's Day 2019
Delivered by the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, this collaborative event will celebrate the achievements of women in Nottingham and beyond, and discuss how to #balanceforbetter.
And finally...
Dr Laura Dean from the School of Life Sciences has discovered a fish called Mary who left her and her colleagues flabbergasted when they found live embryos that had been fertilised inside her — a pregnancy that's not meant to happen in the species.
